A New Hope in the Search: How Thermal Drones Are Reuniting Lost Pets with Their Families in Ohio

Jul 28, 2025 | News, Search and Rescue, Services

The moment you realize your pet is missing is pure panic. Your heart sinks, and your mind races. You call their name, search the neighborhood, and post on social media, but as the hours turn into a day, that fear can turn into a feeling of helplessness. Especially in rural areas like ours in Northeast Ohio (especially Northern Trumbull County & Ashtabula County), the search area can feel overwhelmingly large.

At Strategic Air Captures, we are pet owners too. We understand that feeling, which is why we are proud to introduce a powerful new tool for our community: Lost Pet & Animal Search and Rescue services.

The Challenge of a Traditional Search

A scared or injured animal’s instinct is to hide. They often won’t respond to calls and will hunker down in thick brush, a ditch, or a cornfield, making them nearly invisible to the human eye. Searching vast fields or wooded areas on foot is exhausting and can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack, especially once darkness falls.

How Thermal Drone Technology Changes Everything

This is where modern technology provides a new sense of hope. Our search and rescue drones are equipped with sophisticated thermal imaging cameras.

A thermal camera doesn’t see visible light; it sees heat. Every living animal, from a small cat to a large cow, gives off a heat signature. In the cool of the evening or against the cold ground, this heat signature “glows” on our screen, allowing us to spot an animal from the air even if they are motionless or hiding in partial cover. It effectively allows us to search day and night with incredible efficiency.

The Strategic Air Captures Advantage: Rapid, Local Deployment

Having the right technology is only half the battle. You also need a team that can respond quickly.

We are based right here in Cortland, Ohio, and are ready to deploy rapidly to assist families and farmers across the region. Whether you’ve lost a beloved dog near Warren, a cat in Niles, or valuable livestock outside Youngstown, our mission is to provide the best possible chance of a safe recovery.

We’ve created a dedicated page explaining exactly how our service works. You can learn more about our process and technology here:
